Overview

Perched along the coastal ridgeline of Rancho Palos Verdes, the Crest Road property captures expansive views across the Pacific Ocean. The existing mid-century residence occupies a dramatic hillside site, yet the outdoor spaces surrounding the home had never fully engaged the terrain or capitalized on the remarkable coastal setting.

Our design reimagines the landscape as a series of purposeful terraces that extend living spaces into the hillside. What had previously been disconnected exterior areas becomes a sequence of outdoor environments designed for gathering, relaxation, and immersion in the surrounding coastal landscape.

The project focuses on strengthening the relationship between architecture and terrain. Existing balconies and railings are refined with contemporary glass guardrails that open the home visually to the landscape and views beyond. From these elevated vantage points, circulation flows downward through a carefully structured garden composed of terraces, outdoor rooms, and layered planting zones.

Terraced Hillside Living

The steep grade of the site becomes an asset rather than an obstacle. Sculptural retaining walls organize the hillside into a sequence of outdoor environments that feel both structured and natural.

A sweeping curved wall anchors the landscape composition and guides circulation through the garden. This gesture shapes a series of terraces that accommodate dining areas, fire-side gathering spaces, and quieter moments within the landscape.

Rather than imposing rigid geometry onto the hillside, the terraces follow the natural contours of the terrain, allowing the garden to unfold organically as it descends toward the lower portions of the property.

Architecture Meets Landscape

The mid-century architecture provides a strong visual framework for the design. By simplifying balcony railings and opening views outward with glass elements, the relationship between the structure and the surrounding landscape becomes more fluid.

From the home’s primary living spaces, the garden terraces read as an extension of the architecture itself — a layered landscape that visually pulls the horizon toward the house.

The design also explores opportunities created by the natural grade change beneath the elevated structure, where additional living space and garden connections may be introduced in the future.

A Coastal Garden Strategy

Planting design reinforces the coastal character of the Palos Verdes Peninsula while responding to the practical demands of a steep hillside environment.

Drought-appropriate species are arranged in layered swaths and sculptural groupings that echo the natural hillside vegetation patterns found throughout the peninsula. Edible plantings, ornamental grasses, and screening vegetation create a balance between functional garden use and visual restraint.

These planting systems soften the structural terraces while stabilizing slopes and creating seasonal interest throughout the landscape.
