Overview
Hillcrest II is a comprehensive renovation and refinement of an existing hillside estate in La Cañada. The project addresses the constraints of hillside construction—grading, structural systems, and limited access—through targeted upgrades rather than full redevelopment.Rather than a full redesign, the project focuses on upgrading key structural and spatial elements—transforming the property into a more cohesive, highly livable outdoor environment. The design integrates renovated pool construction, expanded social terraces, productive garden spaces, and a restructured lower hillside into a unified landscape that aligns with the home’s transitional interior direction.
Design Approach: Renovation + Refinement
The project centers on improving what already exists—an approach that is often critical on hillside properties where structural disruption can significantly increase cost, complexity, and permitting timelines.
By preserving the primary site structure and selectively upgrading materials, detailing, and layout, the design achieves a more resolved and contemporary expression without unnecessary reconstruction.
This approach allows the landscape to feel both elevated and grounded—refined without losing its connection to the original property.
Main Terrace: Pool, Fire Lounge & Social Core
The upper terrace serves as the heart of the property.
Key elements include:
- – Renovated infinity-edge pool with updated finishes and detailing, retained within its original structural footprint
- – Central sunken fire lounge establishing a strong spatial axis
- – Expanded lounge and seating zones
- – Outdoor kitchen and dining terrace integrated with raised planting beds
This level now functions as a seamless extension of the home, supporting both everyday living and larger gatherings.
Garden Integration & Lower Level Experience
The hillside below has been repurposed into a layered garden system.
- – Three greenhouse structures support cultivation and seasonal use as a coordinated system
- – Secondary lounge areas provide quieter retreat spaces
- – Circulation paths connect terraces through planted environments
- – Retaining systems are softened through integrated planting
This creates a continuous experience from the upper terrace to the base of the property.
Materials, Lighting & Detailing
A full material upgrade redefines the character of the landscape, aligning exterior elements with the home’s transitional interior renovation.
- – Updated hardscape throughout
- – Refined railing systems
- – Reworked architectural elements including columns
- – Integrated lighting for both function and ambiance
- – Transitional planting palette aligned with interior design
These elements unify the site and establish a more contemporary aesthetic.
Architectural Alignment
The landscape plays a key role in bridging the architectural identity of the home.
By introducing a more tailored and restrained material language, the design connects the traditional exterior with the home’s more contemporary interior—creating a cohesive overall expression.
